In the United Arab Emirates, holding a valid employment visa is a mandatory legal requirement for any individual working under a company or private employer. No person is permitted to work in the UAE without first obtaining the proper residency and labor approvals issued by the UAE government. The employment visa not only authorizes a person to live and work in the country but also serves as the official documentation that links the employee to their sponsoring company. At Jabal Al Haram, we manage the entire visa process on behalf of businesses—ensuring compliance with all UAE labor and immigration regulations. From quota approvals and job offer letters to medical fitness, Emirates ID, visa stamping, and renewals, we handle every step efficiently and professionally. With our trusted expertise, companies can focus on operations while we ensure their workforce is fully and legally authorized to work in the UAE.
How to Legally Obtain a Work Permit in the UAE
As an employer in the UAE, it is your legal obligation to secure a valid work permit for each of your employees. The issuance and regulation of these permits fall under the authority of the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MOHRE), which oversees all employment-related approvals for foreign workers across the country.
Step-By-Step Process To Obtain A Work Permit in the UAE
The employer initiates the process by applying to the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MOHRE) for approval to hire a foreign national. The Ministry reviews the application and may request additional documents or modifications. Once approved, the work permit (initial approval) can be downloaded from the MOHRE portal. Following this, the Ministry issues an entry permit, allowing the employee to enter the UAE. This entry permit is typically valid for 30 days, extendable up to 60 days.
Upon arrival in Dubai, the employer begins the formal process of securing the employee’s residency and work authorization. The employee must complete several steps within the 60-day timeframe, including:
Visiting an Emirates ID center to register and provide biometric data using their passport and entry permit
Undergoing a medical fitness test at an authorized government health facility
Submitting all required documents for a residence visa application through the General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs (GDRFA)
Once the residence visa is stamped in the passport and the labor card (work permit) is issued, the employee is legally permitted to reside and begin working in the UAE under the sponsorship of the employer.
Mainland Visas - Family Residency Visas in UAE
If you are a foreign national residing in the UAE on a valid residence visa, you may be eligible to sponsor your family members under a UAE Family Visa.
However, family sponsorship is subject to specific eligibility criteria, including income thresholds, accommodation requirements, and legal documentation, all of which must be met to bring your dependents to the UAE legally.
UAE Family Visa: Sponsorship Rules and Income Requirements
To sponsor family members or relatives to live in the UAE, specific eligibility criteria must be met. Male residents must earn a minimum monthly salary of AED 4,000 or AED 3,000 with company-provided accommodation. Female residents are required to earn at least AED 10,000, or AED 8,000 plus housing, to be eligible as sponsors.
In addition, all dependents aged 18 and above must undergo and pass a medical fitness test at a government-approved health center in the UAE. This includes mandatory screening for HIV and tuberculosis.
Once these basic conditions are fulfilled, the sponsor must first apply for an entry permit (entry residence visa) for the dependent. After arrival in the UAE, the sponsor has 30 days to complete the process by applying for a residence visa for the dependent, ensuring full legal compliance.
